Be strategic, make your boss happy.

"You must make me happy, and I must make my boss happy."

That's what a manager told me early in my career. (By the way, he’s a great friend of mine now.)

At first, I was perplexed. It sounded almost... transactional. Is that how the world actually works?

Let me explain.

If we take that statement literally, it sounds self-serving. But if we break it down, there's a deeper truth.

“Make me happy” is about delivering results that drive team success, solving more problems than you create, and taking ownership beyond your immediate responsibilities. In other words, supporting your manager’s goals. You get the point.

Why does this matter? Because your manager is juggling a hundred priorities. If you become the person who solves problems, delivers outcomes, and pushes the team forward, you’re not just making their life easier—you’re building trust.

And trust unlocks opportunities.

So why do I think making your manager “happy” is a strategic move for your career?

  1. It’s a reflection of your performance. If your manager is happy with your work, it’s a signal that you’re delivering value and meeting or exceeding expectations. Simple as that.
  2. It creates opportunities for growth. When promotions, stretch assignments, or visibility opportunities arise, who do you think will be top of mind?
  3. Your manager becomes your first sponsor. They’re your advocate in promotion discussions, project allocations, and succession planning. A strong relationship ensures they’ll champion your success.
  4. It makes YOU happier. A good working relationship with your manager minimizes conflict, reduces friction, and creates a more harmonious work environment.

Are you helping your manager succeed? Or are you adding to their stress?

Amigo—managers are human too. They’re navigating challenges just like you. The strongest partnerships are built when you work with them, not just for them.
