Sad Day

Today is a sad day.
A day that moved slowly and felt heavier than usual. A day that made me feel deeply connected to my roots.
Pope Francis, the most important Argentinian in history, has passed away.
I remember seeing him when he was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Cardinal of Buenos Aires, celebrating mass for the pilgrims at the Basilica of Luján after walking 60 kilometers. I went there twice. Years later, I saw him again in Rome, in St. Peter’s Square.
I will remember him as a disruptive leader. Someone who opened the Catholic Church to everyone. Those of other religions, and those who had long been rejected for who they loved or where they came from.
Francis called young people to “make a mess”, to challenge the status quo, to question, to speak out, and to take action.
He refused to live like a king. He led by example.
Rest in peace, Francisco. And thank you.
